Review for site I downloadd the first edition of this book I'm reviewing the second edition here about 20 years ago, and back then this was the number one book for beginning Witches. This 2nd edition book is even better then the 1st as it has nearly twice the information!
It is based on the Seax Wicca Tradition founded by Raymond Buckland but it's a great, non-denominational, non-sectarian book on Witchcraft.
Your audiobook is waiting…
Even if you study with a coven, this book is sure to enhance some aspect of your study. As a matter of fact, I would recommend this book to every style of Witch, even elders. The author is very knowledgeable, having written at least 20 other books on the Craft and various divination. This book is truly the "complete b ook" because it covers everything from why you are interested in Witchcraft, how to become an initiate into the religion, and lays the groundwork for a great, full life of learning.
He gives examples of every beginning aspect such as making your sacred space drawing the circle , and includes the basics of seemingly all types of divination and magick. He teaches about the circle of life, of the holidays, and how to celebrate them.
He includes recipes for food and beverage for the celebrations. He teaches about oils, herbs, runes, meditation, tantra, incense, tarot, altar tools, clothing, candles, colors, astrology, and I could go on and on! The book's appendix includes definitions of Wiccan Denominations, music for rituals and chants, and an expansive reading list. There are many reference charts, tables, figures, and an easy to use index.
This book is a staple for any type of Witch.

If applied, the student can get a good grasp of the basic teachings of the more popular modern Witchcraft traditions. Don't expect this, or any other book to answer all your questions or to teach you the "mysteries" of the Craft.
Only reading widely, application, practice and discipline can do that over years. It is a good place to start, but it IS only one book. One book is not be begin-all and end-all.
As Buckland says, take the information that works for you and start from there, and alw ays search. He has many other books that are excellent as well, and he encourages reading other authors. He doesn't have all the answers, but he can get you to thinking and encourage you on your quest for knowledge, understanding and wisdom.
No author can do it for you. Only you can do that. I give it this rating as compared to all of the books that are out there at present. Could it be better? I do recommend that any aspiring Witch begin with this book. With this book you will establish a solid basic foundation in the Craft.
Buckland's Complete Book Of Witchcraft
However, although the books states that you will be, you will in no way be a 3rd Degree Witch. With this foundation you would also make yourself a very good candidate for apprenticeship to a teaching H igh Priestess or High Priest. Be aware, though, that Mr.
Buckland is not correct on all points and that his book is also colored by his own personal likes and dislikes which is certainly natural. Keep in mind as well that although there are many books on the Craft, contrary to popular belief not all the information is out there AND there are 'blinds' in these books, both accidental and deliberate and with good reasons for the latter. In addition, there is much more to the Craft than the mechanics all the fun oils, incense, athames, cloaks and circles.
The Craft demands growth and spiritual evolution, and no book, even one as good as Buckland's, can do that for you.
The book would be improved if Mr. If you are serious about this path, for the hidden aspects you will need guidance by a teaching High Priestess or High Priest.
This guidance can also shorten the time it will take you to evolve as a Witch, helping you avoid the many sidetracks and pitfalls that people aspiring to become Witches always run into. Buckland states in his book that Witcraft is first a religion. A great book.
The textbook presentation works well, along with the questions at the end of every chapter. Buckland gives you a little bit of everything, and some suggestions on how to continue A rather famous book and it has become a classic among books over Wicca and witchcraft since it was first published. It covers a lot of material to say the least. Perhaps the only big true downside to Raymond Buckland was actively involved in metaphysics and the occult for fifty years.
