For petrography there is a figure that separates minerals by retardation birefringence assuming 30 micrometers thickness is given and lists other optical properties. Colored and colorless minerals are in separate side-by-side tables.

A discussion of imaging software is presented as a box within the text, and a figure comparing modal abundance in thin section is included. For crystallographers the brief discussions of space groups and X-ray diffraction will be distressing. Petrographers will want a reference book for the optical properties of minerals, and petrologists will want a more mathematical approach.

However, as a readable book for Earth science students this book is hard to beat. The basics are all there to prepare and excite students for more advanced courses in crystallography, petrology, and geotectonics. Sign In or Create an Account.

Each chapter ends with references for further reading material for a deeper coverage of the subject. An index and a glossary are given at the end of the book for additional references. This textbook will allow the reader to acquire in a course semester all the basic information needed to describe and understand how rocks form.

The background developed in the early chapters on crystal structures, crystallography, how to used a petrographic microscope… is dense but the explanations are clear and well illustrated. The authors chose to present the systematic mineralogical description simultaneously with the type of rocks in which these minerals occur.

I think that this is a very good idea: The addition of a new chapter dedicated to thermodynamics and kinetics processes that did not appear in the first edition will allow the students to understand more the processes involved in the formation of rocks, and how to determine their ages.

This new chapter will be fundamental by providing a global view on petrology. The uses of minerals in commercial applications are outlined throughout the book, and even the penultimate chapter focuses on some selected examples of Earth material resources that are used in everyday life. Finally, the last chapter discusses the beneficial and negative effects these Earth materials can have on human health.

Another strength of the book is the high quality of its color illustrations. Photocatalytic experiments using this composite film resulted in significant increase in methylene blue degradation under visible light irradiation.

Simulation using first principle on the structural and electronic properties of nitrogen doped rutile TiO2 of oxygen vacancies showed that the impurity elements do not affect the migration of Fermi level while the conduction band of metal atoms move to the Fermi level, forming the N-type semiconductor material. For the heavy metal removal side composite cementations materials were prepared with lead-zinc tailings and lead-zinc smelting slag mixed with cement clinker with low lead leaching potential over a large pH range.

Advances in Materials Science and Engineering

To make full use of barite mineral and obtain composite material bearing, the property of both barite and TiO2 was developed by coating barite surface with TiO2 via a solution method and hydrolysis process. The hiding power and oil absorption value of the composite powder were similar to TiO2 alone.

In addition to these new solid materials, a new enhanced flocculent based on bentonite and formulated with addition of polymeric chloride aluminum, cationic polyacrylamide, ferrous sulfate, and aluminum sulfate was developed for potential application in drinking water in Karamay City, Xinjiang. The treated water reached or exceeded the drinking water standard of China in decolorization and deodorization as well as heavy metal removal. From materials utilizations studies, several Earth materials were utilized for the removal of contaminants.

Uptake of ciprofloxacin on synthesized birnessite was mainly via surface adsorption, instead of cation exchange and quantum mechanics simulation showed that the final energy of the interactions between ciprofloxacin and birnessite was decreased under the condition when the average oxidation states of Mn were lower.

Studies on the effect of sintering temperature on membranes performance showed that increases in sintering temperature of the membranes raised the average pores diameter from 0.

The results provided optimal combinations for the preservation of iron, especially iron cultural relics. The experimental and simulated breakthrough curves showed that classical colloid filtration theory is able to predict the transport and fate of iron oxide nanoparticles stabilized with PAA up to ppm in a porous media.Indeed it is a fine capstone to the careers of two distinguished geologists.

Each chapter contains links to Web sites offering software programs, animations and images of rocks samples hand specimens and thin sections. Thank You For Visiting.

The importance of Earth materials to human cultural development and the hazards they pose to humans are discussed in later chapters. We use your LinkedIn profile and activity data to personalize ads and to show you more relevant ads.
