Then there are the challenges, or "discoveries" to use Laurens' word: Once we have settled down to reading the book together start-to-finish give us a chance, we've only had this book for a week! I would have expected to pay three times what site is charging for this book, based on similar books aimed at software developers.

download it! It starts out as if you know nothing about lego building, robots, or programming.

If you are a somewhat experienced programmer, as I am, this book shows you the ins and outs of the NXTG language and how it works with the Lego robot.

I lead a robotics team in a 4H club and I didn't learn about this book until the first year of instruction was just about over. I wish I would have had it before but I'll have it for the next round of classes. The book leads you through the basics and then it walks you through different projects to construct and program. It shows basic flow charting techniques which are used in any programming language. In my opinion, there could be two improvements.

The programming blocks could be in color that would probably increase the cost , and it didn't get into gears as much as I would like.

If you want to understand programming more than just downloading some else's program and how to design and build a Lego Mindstorm robot rather than watching a youtube video, this book is for you.

The LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT Discovery Book

Happy Programming,. One person found this helpful. It's that good! I cannot imagine giving the gift of Lego Mindstorms without this book! My son, then 13, has commented throughout the year that he couldn't possibly have built as much as he had built without this book. He finds the book helpful and easy to understand.

He's been playing with Lego and building since he was 3 years old. For him to say that about this set surprised me, but he loves it. Just today he turned 14 yesterday , he was telling me is working through the touch sensor chapter and hoped to complete it soon. He's still, after 1 full year, still using this book as a guide. Absolutely worth the money! It's the missing instruction manual that should come bundled with every NXT 2.

Even though I'm a programmer and figured much out on my own this book was an eye-opener. There are things that you just don't get by looking at your NXT set like frictionless parts to figure this one out I would have had to play for a long time with the set, I need to mention that I have a french manual and did not read through it or the English version, I'm just that lazy, but when skimming it I do not remember seeing anything on this topic.

I think this book really makes it easier for year-olds to pick this up as well, normally this would be a daunting task with just the set and the examples.

Why rate it 4 out of 5? Because it's black and white, I feel like a dog when reading the book. The printing is good you can figure out the correspondence of the colors to the grayscale version using their table, but it feels as if it's missing that last bit of polish that would have made this a perfect book.

This is like the missing manual. We had Mindstorm installed and the computer was talking to the controller before we opened the book.

Based on the book we assembled and programmed the robot in short afternoon. Step by step by step. No hunting around for details or guidance. This seems like a good book for beginners.

It describes in detail the construction of several projects and how to program them. No prior experience is assumed.

The book begins with simple projects and works it way through increasingly complex levels. Each project—there are eight in all—is accompanies by excellent diagrams that show the components and how they are assembled. Programming and wiring are fully explained. Linux does not get a mention in this text, but I have seen its use covered in other books on Lego robotics.

An exceptionally well presented guide that can be used by children and adults, and by teachers and students.

The RepKover binding allows the book to lie flat at an opening, which is a great advantage for anyone following the insructions and diagrams. Laurens Valk: Copyright Linux Users of Victoria, Inc.
